I was first elected to Yorkton City Council in 2003, and am looking to return for a third term. The city of Yorkton is undergoing unprecedented growth, and we need a strong city council to deal with the many decisions that will accompany this growth.
Issues that will face our new council will include annexation, a vital undertaking by the city which will allow for 25 years of future growth and orderly development for our residents. We have made significant offers to our surrounding RM’s and have rebuffed. Council believes we have been more than fair in our negotiations, and we look forward to a mutually beneficial settlement.
Decisions to build the Gallagher Centre and fund a major water project as well as renewal of infrastructure were difficult, but those decisions have been pivotal in attracting new business and investment to the region. With the development of two major canola crushing facilities and the announcement of a potash mine just south of Yorkton the future growth of the city is assured.
We have added two police officers and partnered with the province to add two more to assure the safety of our residents. On the housing front we have put incentives in place to encourage investment in new apartments in the city.
We also need to work in partnership with the provincial government to make sure that our economic boom is affordable for our taxpayers. Growth can be expensive for municipalities, and we need to work hard to control tax increases.
These are exciting times for the city of Yorkton, and I look forward to serving our local residents for another three years.
